4: The Rising Moon
Hold the flag
high beneath
the rising
moon.
Hail the night
sky, the dawn
of impending
doom.
Behold the
horizon
where
they take
to flight.
Embrace
the
darkness
as they
blot
out
the
light.
Captain H_____,
It has been two years since the raising of the Pirate Floodgates and the birth of the Great Seas of America. As you well know our hold on this territory has remained widely uncontested with an exception of the Southern Seas. It has become a growing concern of ours that this matter has not been taken care of despite considerable fleet reinforcements. For things to progress as planned, this threat must be isolated in the most expedient fashion.
Since you have proven your resourcefulness in your campaigns among the northern seas, we have routed you and your fleet to rendezvous with my command vessel at the point of heaviest resistance on the fringes of the Southern Seas. A secondary reason for your involvement in this matter is that we
believe the resistance to be headed by Carl McStallion of whom you have had considerable experience dealing with in the past. It is unfortunate that you were
diverted from your pursuit of this individual previously in favor of more pressing matters. You will find, quite to your liking, that this time the subject is of the highest importance.
If you are successful in this operation, I believe there
will be a rather overdue promotion in order. It appears, however, that you have obtained the
highest rank alloted to your kind. In light of this, we are willing to make a compromise of sorts. As our territory grows, our need for more officers of dark blood is becoming
increasingly necessary. There is no doubt among the Council that you shall be the one chosen to lead us into Phase Two much like you did with the former. Once Carl is in our captivity, you shall be reborn in our likeness on the following dusk.
In the meantime, make the most of your time under the sun. The curse of daylight shall be purged but not for many years and we have few ambassadors on your side of the dawn. It seems our enemies have discovered that they do not have the upper hand under cover of night and so they have resorted to making their most concentrated attacks during the day. This matters very little given that our Seas now engulf over 80% of their land, leaving only mountains, which do them little good, and coastlines to block any naval forces that they may have left from entering our Seas. Please finish up whatever business you have left in the Midwestern Seas and see to it that a formidable captain is instated in your stead.
Count Vih'rel , High Lord of the Dark Council

The pirates came in the night, beating down Carl's door to make their entrance. They seemed bolder than normal, still half of them died to his blade within moments. A crash sounded in the back room and through his window the bats flew. They took on the form of pale men clothed in darkness. He turned to face them, his sword pierced their shadows. Their claws pierced his body, found the source of his strength, and drained it from him. He collapsed.
