4: The Wild North
I've been traveling north for weeks now, maybe longer, it's hard to tell. There are long tracks of time which I can't remember, I simply feel it slipping away completely unaccounted for.
Have I been a cheetah this whole time? The
thought doesn't seem strange to me anymore.
I was human once I think. You wouldn't be able to tell anymore, there is only a beast now. But beneath this fur, these fangs... I can hardly concentrate long enough to piece it together. Who was I? Humans have names, that's gone too. Now I'm a cheetah, just another wild animal with no identity.
I'm hungry again. I kill a rabbit, enough to hold me over for a while anyways. Then I wander north. Days pass, not a thought crosses my mind the whole time, just instinct guiding me.
A path catches my eye, I follow it. I hear someone behind me and run. I'm fast, whatever it is that's following me won't be able to keep pace very long. A giant steps out in front of me and stops me dead in my tracks. The footsteps behind me grow louder as I narrowly escape a gigantic net.
I turn and run the other way. There's a man with a cape. Black smoke erupts from his hands. It's intoxicating, the giant coughs behind me. I can't see anything, can't concentrate on anything, can't fight it any longer.
Research Log of Victor VonVillainstein. June 20, 2007
The most recent test subject seems to have lost total control of his transformation abilities. Up until this point all subjects have reverted solely to their animal form within several weeks after their first transformation. It's hard to tell whether the extended duration experienced by the current patient is due, in part, to the alterations I made to the formula or something unique about the patient himself. Though technically he was never completely in control of the transformation, he did show additional marked improvement over the previous subjects. Most notably of which included large traces of both intelligence and abstract reasoning that remained present while in the altered state. Unfortunately, these elements are becoming more scarce and even untraceable at times making it very hard to pinpoint his recent movements. Luckily, I was able to intercept him on the borders of the Collectors' realm using a heavy suppressant fog. The patient is down for the time being but I don't know how long his containment cell will hold him if he wakes up in a fowl mood. It is unlikely that the nullifying toxins will work on him as witnessed during the procedure taken with the previous subject. The recent alterations to my formula seem to counteract the toxins' desired effect giving rise to instinctive and aggressive behavior.
The younger subjects have been missing since they were propelled into space earlier this month. I can't rule out the outcome that they have evolved further upon exposure to various solar radiations, making them completely untraceable. The recent sporadic movement of the aforementioned subject would point to their location being somewhere inside the Collectors' kingdom. How they would arrive there is uncertain at this time but well within the realm of possibility. I'll look into this matter at a later time once I have made proper modifications to the tracing equipment.
Experimentation will resume on the contained subject if conditions remain favorable. He has reacted positively to the stabilization serum thus far, there may even be hope of reverting his condition without having to take more drastic measures.
