2: One Library Still Stands
Amidst the struggle against Dark Bark's forces there was but one library that held firm against the army of treelings. In fact it was left untouched, no books were deshelved, no pages were torn out and strewn about, but there were oddly enough beautiful trees that no one quite remembered growing in the oddest places. To the fair village-folk of Stavanger it seemed as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened at all. This is where Chris journeyed for he had read of an old lady that ran this very library in the Tomb of Ancient Lore. If what this book told of her was true then surely she would be able to guide him in his quest.
The old woman set aside her book to watch as Chris approach her library. With the wave of her hand it was back on the shelf and a second later she was standing next to the enormous tree that grew in the middle of library. Surely Dark Bark had sent his most fiercesome of tree monsters after her and the other Ancients of the Forest. Night after night they came, if Chris had arrived too much later, there may not have have been a library standing in this spot. This tree marked the most recent of their invasions. Since the wards protecting the library from the
outsides proved too strong for them, the tree monsters borrowed deep into the earth and emerged in this very spot. The magic that twisted Dark Bark could not be undone, but the powers he used to control the forest could be reversed by the Ancients. Dark Bark's hold over his forest was growing stronger and these trees were becoming twisted and wild, soon they would lose their true nature and this could not be reversed.
Chris approached as she gathered a book from it's place in the spot next to the tree. "This is the first of the Books of Ages Past, the rest will be brought by the other Ancients of the Forest. I will ensure it's safe keeping until we reach the island. I'm sure you will find something to your liking amidst my collection until then." She turned to the young man who stocked books beside her, "Prepare my ship and send for the children, we set sail for the Isle that will Rise in the morning." In a flash of light she was gone. Chris looked for a good book to drown his thoughts in while the afternoon faded away.
