1: An Ancient Evil Lurks
Most of the misconceptions behind the line of thinking which leads to the conclusion that librarians are boring comes from the fact that those who hold this view do not read books and as a result are ignorant of stories chronicling the great Librarians of Old. The last of these infamous librarians was Chris, keeper of the Tomb of Ancient Lore and defender of the Books of Ages Past. He disguised himself as a humble bookkeeper at Carolina Rediviva, where he lived happily for many years. Unfortunately things like happiness and peace are a rare commodity for men like Chris for there was an ancient evil lurking in the darkest forests of the world.
When the first forest burst forth from the earth, there was a being created to be its keeper and protector. Later twisted by vile wood magics he was transformed into the monster known as Dark Bark, Master of the Underbrush. With his army of treelings (lesser tree monsters) ready to march into battle at his very whim, Dark Bark seeks vengeance and destruction upon all those who would cause his forest harm. This evil lay dormant for many years, preying only on those foolish enough to bring harm to the trees of the earth. The invention of the printing press threatened to destroy the forests of the world and replace them with books, books filled with lies teaching children to hate trees. Dark Bark could remain in his forest no longer, the world of man would suffer greatly as he reigned down destruction as payment for what they had done. This marked the beginning of his War on Books. Once his forces were prepared, Dark Bark destroyed 472 major libraries in one night. The world would wake to the sound of torn pages fluttering in the morning breeze.
Chris alone knew how to face this foe for he possessed the Tomb of Ancient Lore, in which it is written:
"A librarian will rise to hold off Dark Bark's underbrush army by harnessing the mighty power of the volcanoes. From the bed of the ocean floor, the greatest of these volcanoes will rise and in the heart of this island, the librarian will set up a mage village. There he will train those chosen in the Books of Ages Past for thirty years in the art of spell casting and teamwork until they are ready for the Day of Brilliance."
So he set off on his quest as it was written, seeking first the Books of Ages Past.
